Teachings of Sathya Sai Baba
At the age of 14, Sathya Sai Baba declared to his parents that he had come into this world with a mission to re-establish the principle of Righteousness, to motivate love for God and service to fellow man. His teachings are universal.
Through his speeches and writings, Sathya Sai Baba has offered a veritable ocean of knowledge and guidance on all aspects of spiritual, religious, and value-oriented living. He has often repeated that it is not necessary to drink the whole ocean to know its taste, that it is not necessary to read all scriptures to live a life of joy, peace and love. It is enough to put into practice one aspect of spiritual teaching.
Sathya Sai Baba teaches that man's basic nature is divine and that the purpose of life is the realisation of this divinity. This will occur, he says, by leading a moral life, by rendering selfless service to those in need, by engaging in devotional practices, and by developing love, respect, and compassion for all life. As one strives to transform the worldly life of self-centred desires and attachments into a higher spiritual life of selflessness and devotion, the foundation is built for receiving God's Grace. It is this Grace that will reveal our true nature to each of us.
Sathya Sai Baba reminds us that mankind is unique among all of God's Creation; human beings are capable of recognising that they emanate from God. We have the capacity to commune with God by turning inward. Ultimately, it is our destiny to merge with God. Sathya Sai Baba teaches that all religions are expressions of these same universal principles.
A few drops in the ocean of Sathya Sai Baba's teachings, an attempt to encapsulate their essence follows. Sathya Sai Baba urges mankind to:
- Believe in God, for there is only ONE GOD for all mankind, though he may be called by many names.
- Follow the respective religions sincerely and live daily lives in consonance with the teachings of good behaviour and morality.
- Respect all other religions - for no religion advocates the negative and lower qualities of man.
- Perform selfless service to the poor, the sick, and the needy without thought of reward or fame.
- Cultivate in lives the values of truth, divine love, right conduct, peace, and non- violence and promote these values among all.
- Be patriotic and respect the laws of the country in which they live.
"All men are of one lineage, of one divine origin.
Therefore, recognise the divinity in each being
and banish all limiting thoughts and projections."
"There is only one Caste, the Caste of Humanity;
There is only one Religion, the Religion of Love;
There is only one Language, the Language of the Heart;
There is only One God and He is Omnipresent."
The teachings of Sri Sathya Sai Baba are universal. He has declared, "The entire mankind is my family. There is no one in this world who does not belong to me. I shall not give you up even if you keep afar. I shall not forsake even those who deny me. Those who stay, as well as those who stay away, will be drawn near and saved".
Sathya Sai Baba can only be described as the personification of pure, selfless love, the embodiment of perfect peace and bliss, the essence of all goodness. In his teachings he befriends all faiths and emphasises the unity of all religions in the oneness of divinity.
Sathya Sai Baba says, "Love is God, God is Love". Love more and more people, transform love into service, service into Worship; that is the highest spiritual practice.
Sathya Sai Baba’s basic teachings can be summarised in eight words as follows:
"Love All - Serve All"
"Help Ever - Hurt Never"
